A Brief History of ERESE N’ OGIE AMAGBA

Prince Erese Adolor was the fourth son of Prince Odin-Ovba who later became Oba Adolor , who reigned in Benin about 1848AD-1888AD. His father Oba Adolor was kind-hearted and industrious. He encouraged commerce and established various markets such as ‘Ekiadolor’, which bears his name till date. He was very generous and provided for the upkeep of the old and helpless. Oba Adolor reigned for forty years and was the Progenitor of Benin Inheridatary Royal Skin coloration called “KENEKE”. Oba Adolor had four sons, Idugbowa, Orokhorho, Idusere, and ‘ERESE’ who became the Enogie of Amagba Dukedom, and four daughters, Ehendia, Izegbuwa, Idefua and ldehen.   Prince Erese’s mother hails from Ebelle now Igueben Local Government Area and she was a beautiful Princess. Erese was sent to Amagba as a duke by his elder brother( Oba Ovonramwen) in about 1890. Upon getting to Amagba he was received by Pa.Osagie on arrival. Prince Erese Adolor was a native doctor,a great farmer of high repute, and own a herbal healing home. History says he was in charge of collecting dues from the neighbouring villages as part of his royalties.   He inherited the royal birthmark, and skin coloration called “KENEKE”( which he inherited from his father Oba Adolor). This royal skin coloration, “Kenene” is hereditary and can only be found amongst the Benin royal family till date. Hence the appellation/ praise names given to the Oba of Benin, “Ovbie-Ekenekene Madoyo, Ogha devbu modia N’arhoen” . Which means, “Son of the one with the royal skin coloration or gloriously speckled body whose identity is known when coming from afar”. It is a word used by all Binis in exalting the Oba of Benin till date. At his death, he had twelve children. Six sons and six daughters. But oral history said that he had other children who left to an unknown destination and they never came back. Erese Adolor, the Duke of Amagba died about 1928.
